Autumn is an amazing season of the year! But why is autumn referred to as the creative season?
Each season represents a significant meaning within our daily lives. Whether the meaning is scientific or spiritual, the change is apparent regardless of where you live. If we were to look at the changing of a season in a scientific perspective, according to NASA, Earth is inclined at an angle from the plane of orbit around the sun and the planet rotates 365 times. In simpler terms, this means that Earth is revolving around the sun on a tilted axis causing seasons to occur.
But what about the more emotional, human, and spiritual version of seasons changing? The answer to that can be found among many searches. The YouTube video from AviaWhatsYourSign does a great job describing the four seasons. However, doing a simple search on the internet will generally give you symbolic or metaphoric references to what each season represents. For example: spring represents birth, summer is youth, autumn is maturity, and winter is death. The pattern is described to be the natural state of time for all life on Earth. With this in mind, you can clearly see each seasons changing when living further away from the equator; the sky becomes a brighter shade of blue and the leaves on the trees change color. However, even while living near the equator, the temperatures fluctuate to a cooler point and the effects of the seasons changing can still be felt regardless.
The season of autumn is an awesome season in general from start to finish. To many people, the fall season is a relief from the intense summer heat. Though summer is widely valued for the ability to have fun in the sun, nothing beats being able to be in the sunlight without that heat lingering! But what makes autumn more genuine than any other season is the ability to be creative.
Halloween! The 98th holiday listed on HolidayInsights.com is one of the most creative holidays of the year. When do you ever create something for a holiday that is to express yourself or become a different person? You might think that Easter and Christmas falls into that category as they have iconic characters tied to them. However, Halloween literally allows you to become anything and everything with a costume design of your choice! Of course, there are limitations and societal practices to take into consideration when coming up with such costumes. You do not want to get into trouble and be a root cause of something terrible, but you at least want to have fun being something that you normally cannot be on a day-to-day basis.
According to History.com, Halloween was originally adopted from a festival created by the Celts 2,000 years ago called Samhain (“SAH-win”), which was celebrated between October 31st and November 1st to bridge the day between the living and the dead. Thus, giving us a setting to bring the horrific mood for a day on Earth. As time progressed, Halloween was changed to be more of a children and family holiday. With the idea of children wearing cute and silly costumes depicted as weird beings or creatures and going to people’s houses asking for candy or they will be tricked. Nowadays, the words “trick-or-treat” used are a staple to just ask to be given candy in general. Without the nasty tricks involved. Of course, we cannot forget about the age group where “trick-or-treating” no longer is an option and you will embarrass yourself otherwise. Late teens to young adults can find themselves still participating in Halloween with parties and get togethers. However, if those do not appeal to you, then dressing up for the sake of Halloween and walking around is still a valid option. As the tradition of the being a part of the holiday spirit will be carried from the original Samhain festival.
Did you ever stop to think: why do I get to make a costume for my child, myself, or even relatives? CNN reported that the history of such costume making was that the Celts disguised themselves as the dead, or denizens of the underworld, to ward off the evil spirits or to hopefully be ignored altogether. In actuality, the costumes they created in the beginning of Halloween were more terrifying than some of the modern costumes today. Thankfully, we do not send children looking like monsters so horrifying to be even given candy.
Now that you know a bit of the origin of Halloween and the creation of costumes, you can start by thinking of ways to be creative and festive! The entire reason of seasons changing may scientifically represent the foundation of how our world alters our way of life. With the changing of temperatures and less sunlight during the daytime thanks to the Earth’s axis being tilt. But deep down, the human side of things that make the spiritual, supernatural, and emotional properties come to life from our own imagination is why the autumn season is the creative season. If the Celts had not made the idea of Samhain, there would not be a holiday to express yourself in any creative way.
