Every year, more people revisit some classic horror video games once Halloween rolls around. Halloween 2022 has a ton of classic horror video game titles for everyone to explore. Children, young adults, and even the elders are exploring the heart-pumping realms of terror as they venture to new platforms of entertainment. The gaming industry is a prime example of a medium that is sought after by all ages. Video games delve people into new exciting worlds that are fictitious and thought out. Most video games allow people to play as unique characters that take on larger-than-life problems and find solutions to end the chaos, struggles, or nightmares in general. Instead of watching a movie that is roughly a couple hours long, video games provide hours of entertainment that keep people engaged. Which makes for a perfect case of spending an entire October month and playing one (or a few) classic horror video games till Halloween 2022 arrives.

Dead Space (2008)

Dead Space is a third-person futuristic alien-oriented classic horror video game about Isaac Clarke, an engineer in search for his missing girlfriend. Isaac discovers his girlfriend works as a medical officer aboard a mining spaceship known as the Kellion. Furthermore, all contact on the Kellion is mysteriously lost and Isaac joins an investigation team to explore the problem. A classic adventure story gone horribly and disturbingly wrong. Dead Space immediately places the player into a frightening experience from start to finish, which makes for a thrilling and exciting adventure. What the game does well is it captures the horror element with the lighting effects and mood. The entire game is dark with atmospheric lighting that helps build the tension. While the mood is down-right scary and nightmarish. Dead Space might be of the older generation of video games to purchase, but the sheer horror mastery of this title still lasts even today.

Announced recently, Dead Space is receiving a remake coming January 27, 2023. Be sure to check out the updated and modern version of the game coming soon!

Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes (2021)

Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is an interactive survival horror video game centered around the Iraq War in 2003. A platoon of American soldiers is surveying an area believed to house chemical weapons. However, upon searching the location, the platoon is dropped into an ancient underground Mesopotamian temple by a sudden earthquake. Looking for a way back to the surface, the platoon finds an unexpected colony of bat-like creatures that hunt them. House of Ashes exhibits a more movie-like experience for players who wish to approach a horror story with their creativity. The elements that make this game horrifying are the choices made by the player and the discovery of these strange enemies. Players can permanently kill characters with mistakes, leaving less and less survival chances as the game continues. While the discovery of an eerie bat-like creature capable of killing highly trained American soldiers is another highlight.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is also coming with a sequel called The Devil in Me releasing on November 18th, 2022. Unfortunately, this title will not make the Halloween list of video games this year.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999)

The Resident Evil series is a growing franchise even outside the realm of the video game industry. With the amount of movies, TV series, and other sources of material that the franchise has to offer, many people are exposed to the fantastic horror-driven properties of Resident Evil. However, in my opinion, nothing compares to how awesome the third mainline video game entry has to offer. For those that do not know, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a survival classic horror video game that revolves around the physical state of a United States city being overrun by a virus outbreak. The virus in question turns normal people in to literal undead zombies and is spreading rapidly out of control. Players take control of a local law enforcement agent, Jill Valentine, as she finds a way to escape the terrifying plague. However, in her quest to seek her refuge, she is being tracked and hunted by a terrifying 7-foot bioweapon known as Nemesis. The entire game is a timeless experience that encapsulates a pseudo-exsistant realm of a possible zombie outbreak. Followed by a menacing and extremely strong stalker attempting to end your life. Quickly.

There are still ways to obtain this title today, however, if you wish for a more modern version of the title Resident Evil 3 then check this page out!

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (2021)

Recently re-released last year and with a follow-up title releasing next year, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is an excellent third-person survival classic horror video game. Everyone loves a good ghost story. Why not play a game with ghosts haunting you? Literally. Maiden of Black Water embraces the cold reality of people’s untimely deaths that are tied to a strange and dangerous ritual. Yuri Kozukata, the main protagonist, works as an antique shop assistant that can visually see ghosts. She struggles to keep her sanity and wishes nothing more than to rid herself of this awful ability. However, her local town is reporting that people are going missing without a trace. Yuri soon realizes that the disappearing people are ghosts that she can see thanks to that ability. Taking the investigation of the missing people into her own hands, she decides to find the cause of these disturbing deaths. After trailing a few apparitions, the ghosts lead her towards the local mountain where a forgotten ritual performed centuries ago is still active.

Fortunately, this game was widely accepted by the gaming consumer market and a planned unreleased title of the series is coming available next year! Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was originally released only in Japan and is not a direct sequel to any of the Fatal Frame titles.

Minecraft (2011)

Minecraft has been a growing success since the time of release. Released on practically every platform known to man, the game is an absolute commodity for everyone of all ages. However, why would something like Minecraft be on this list of horror games? My best friend and I were playing this game one day; randomly he asked me if I ever realized how scary this game can be? He noted that the enemies in this game represent monsters and things that you would never think to fight in a survival builder. At least, in the general sense. There are zombies, skeletons, spiders, a tall and dark man-like teleporting creature, witches, and more hunting you every day you play the game legitimately. With the added monsters over the years, Minecraft certainly has scary moments. Exploring the caves gives you a spine-tingling feeling of being hunted. Every little sound, even if they are just random animals, makes you sometimes jump with fright. Overall, the point of Minecraft being on this list is to demonstrate the power of simplicity that an unrealistic game can have on the soul.

While the list of horror genre video games extends far above from the five mentioned, your ability to explore classic horror video games this coming holiday depends on your preferences. However, hopefully, this list of classic horror video games broadens your horizons for venturing into the unknown. May you have luck in your endeavors to survive the nightmares that haunt and stalk you this Halloween.
